CANON: Shin Megami Tensei IV
CANON POINT: After the White shows Flynn visions of the future
CANON INFORMATION:Sometime in the near future, an angry, dictatorial God decides that he's had enough of humanity and brings about a horrific nuclear holocaust. Because they manage to erect a huge dome over the city just in time, Tokyo survives more or less intact -- at least compared to everywhere else in the world. However, its streets are overrun by man-eating demons, the city is half-destroyed, and humans are forced to eke out a meager existence hiding in old subway stations. The only two major powers offering any sort of security to the average citizen are (a) a criminal gang that uses Soylent Green drugs of questionable origin to buy off rampaging demons, and (b) a creepy religious cult in which power and money determine a person's worth and the weak basically have no rights.

Worse, a host of angels descend to Tokyo, kidnap a bunch of children from their distraught parents, and whisk them away to live on top of a city they construct on top of the dome. As generations grow up on top of the dome, unaware of the existence of Tokyo just below them, these children become the subjects of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, a feudal society in which the vast majority of people toil endlessly to provide comfort and wealth for a sheltered upper class.

The main opposing powers in SMT IV are God and his angels, which represent the concept of Order; Satan and his demonic retinue, representing Chaos; and the White, a group of mysterious beings that have embraced total nihilism and are convinced that the only way to free the universe from God's iron fist is to destroy existence itself.

Basically, everyone is terrible and everything sucks.

Wiki entry on Jonathan: http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Jonathan

PERSONALITY: Born as a member of the wealthy Luxuror class in the medieval Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, Jonathan’s early life was one of leisure and plenty, lived safely within the confines of Mikado Castle. Like the other Luxurors, all of Jonathan’s needs were provided for by the backbreaking work of the lower-class Casualries that labored largely outside the city walls, with the understanding that as a Luxuror, his duty was providing guidance and wisdom to the common laboring class.

Jonathan’s life took a sharp curve when he was chosen to be a Samurai: a warrior destined to work tirelessly to protect Mikado from any demons that might threaten the safety of the kingdom. Though it meant abandoning his former life of luxury, Jonathan took his new responsibilities to heart, and applied himself to gaining the powers and support of demon allies in order to better to defend against demons hostile to Mikado.

Softhearted, just, and kind, Jonathan quickly establishes himself in the main cast as the voice of reason, treating Samurai from the Casualry class as equals and attempting to defuse conflict wherever possible. He consistently advocates mercy, tolerance, and listening in favor of taking rash action. Unlike Walter, who increasingly comes to symbolize the concept of Chaos, Jonathan is clearly a proponent of Order, preferring to work within the confines of the Samurai’s code of behavior in the name of the greater good. Fittingly, when a split arises amongst his friends as to how to work towards a better world, Jonathan defines equality as treating all people the same, regardless of whether they are strong or weak, while Walter defines equality as giving everyone the opportunity to rise to power, so long as they possess power enough to carve their way to the top.

Jonathan can be best described as a kind, compassionate person who greatly values stability and peace, and places the welfare of his country over all other concerns, including his personal feelings, his friends, and his own life. Jonathan is deeply affected upon learning of the chaos that Tokyo has fallen into, and displays great empathy and understanding for the suffering of the weak. He freely offers his help to even the people of other worlds, bending the rules to do so as long as doing so does not actively harm the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado. It is worth noting that Jonathan will not break the rules, however -- he works within the system, while Walter is content to tear down whatever rules do not suit him.

Jonathan’s love for order and peace is so great, in fact, that the idea of change itself unsettles and even frightens him. When asked to answer questions in the Passage of Ethics, for example, his answers clearly favor preserving fairness and tradition – leveling the playing field at the expense of excluding those with extraordinary attributes, for instance, or rejecting technology if it would uproot the lives of his fellow citizens.

As another example, Jonathan learns later in the game that the Archangels of Mikado have silenced (i.e. completely erased the existence of) all dissonant voices within Mikado and plan to destroy anyone from Tokyo who tries to emigrate to Mikado in hopes of a better life. He expresses dismay and disbelief at their callous disregard for human life – yet is still determined to carry out their orders. The idea of Tokyoites streaming into Mikado and tearing apart the fabric of his country’s society is a frightening one, and though the Archangels’ actions fly in the face of his personal morals, Jonathan truly believes that the two countries must remain separate in order preserve Mikado’s peaceful way of life. Though he is deeply sorrowful when his friends choose not to accompany him in this decision, he does not allow his personal feelings to sway his resolve; he cannot see a way in which Walter’s plan to bring down the current order in both Tokyo and Mikado does not result in mass suffering and loss of life. While his point that Walter’s plan lacks realism certainly has merit, Jonathan’s plan will also result in loss of life and perpetuate a status quo in which Mikado is peaceful but ruled by a totalitarian dictatorship bereft of free will.

At the same time, he clearly still considers Walter a friend, and pointedly does not report Walter’s decision to pursue open war against Tokyo and Mikado to the authorities. Jonathan genuinely cares about almost anyone he crosses paths with, even if his duty to his kingdom ultimately comes first. He is calm and considerate by nature and rarely vindictive, understanding that even if he and his friends disagree, they are all acting according to what they think is best.

ABILITIES: Jonathan is basically a normal human who learns to negotiate and make contracts with demonic creatures (who can then teach him various magics and abilities). He seems to have an especial affinity for Ice and Force magic. Magical abilities aside, he is experienced at the use of pistols and swords.

Spells:
Rakukaja: Boosts defense by 1 level to player's party.
Bufudyne: Heavy Ice attack to 1 enemy.
Mabufula: Medium Ice attack to all enemies.
Zandyne: Heavy Force attack to 1 enemy.
Mazanma: Medium Force attack to all enemies.
Mediarahan: Recovers all HP (party)
Amrita: Cures all ailments
Recarm: Revives with little HP

INVENTORY: His gun, his sword. Also, a small assortment of ordinary and largely useless drugstore-type items which he has managed to stuff into his pockets, like some loose vitamins and a tube of lipstick.

MEMORY ALTERATION: After viewing the White's vision of the future in a rather trippy dream sequence, Jonathan remembers being offered the opportunity to affect the course of his own world by demonstrating his resolve through his actions in another. He agrees, and finds himself in Subnautica's setting.

SAMPLE: Jonathan picked his way through the streets of Chantes, uneasy in his heart despite their mission. It was true that he'd seen and heard much in the past few weeks -- been exposed to worlds and revelations he would have never dreamed of being privy to as a pampered Luxuror.

Yet what manner of sorcery (or technology, which at times seemed hardly different) could keep the sun from rising in the sky? A stray goblin skirted around him, eyeing him mistrustfully. Jonathan watched him go.

Though it would be unconscionable of him to say so aloud, these disturbed him also. In his own world, the goblins would no doubt be considered demons, rightfully cast out of man's domain. Bringing peace between these creatures and the humans?

"Pardon me," he said, calling up to one of the houses. It was a beautifully crafted affair, and would not have been out of place as the domain of a Luxuror back home. He saw a flash of movement in one of the windowpanes, but it was quickly gone as the owner of the house ducked back behind the curtains and hastily drew them closed.

Jonathan sighed. He understood that the people hear were fearful, and rightly so. But how was one to investigate without questioning the populace? Perhaps he would have been better served trying to make contact with one of the goblins.

No sooner had he begun along this train of thought than he felt himself shoved violently from behind. Nimble fingers scrambled at the fastenings of his Gauntlet, but he lashed out with the butt of his gun, catching the ruffian under the chin. With a choking sound, the goblin fell to the ground, clutching at his throat. Mastering his revulsion, Jonathan knelt down beside the man. "Please, be calm," he said in a voice made as soothing as he could manage. "I will heal your wounds."

Would only that fixing the rest of this world would be so easy.
